The Need for
Make-up Air
Exhausting contaminants, undesirable odors, excessive heat and general
ventilation requirements, often cause “air starvation” within a building.
When exhaust exceeds available replacement air, a negative pressure occurs.
This demand for outside air, when uncontrolled, causes air to be drawn in
through doors, windows, cracks and other building openings. Back drafts
occur in natural flues, ventilator and stacks. Exterior doors can be hard
to open. Unwanted contaminants and moisture are drawn into the building
resulting in drafts and poor temperature control causing guest discomfort
and building moisture problems.
To
avoid air starvation, controlled make-up air to replace exhausted air is
essential. Make-up air provides clean, filtered, dehumidified, tempered air
to maintain comfortable and healthy living conditions. Often it is required
by law. By controlling with make-up air, unwanted moisture and contaminants
are removed prior to entering the living space and drafts are kept to
minimum.
It is a
misconception that the addition of make-up air increases energy costs.
Quite the opposite is correct. When air is exhausted, an equal amount must
be replaced. Operating savings are actually obtained by providing
controlled make-up air, as the air is conditioned prior to entering the
building by equipment designed for the purpose. Otherwise this air will
infiltrate into the building and having already been sensed by the
occupants, must then be conditioned by building equipment at less efficient
conditions.
Properly designed rooftop heating and air conditioning equipment must be
designed specifically for 100% outside air for make-up air purposes.
Standard rooftop heating and air conditioning equipment is not adequate for
this purpose without considerable field modifications and this is not
recommended for many reasons, among which are long term reliability and
single source responsibility requirements. Units provided for make-up air
should include as a minimum, the following factory installed items:
- 100% outside air hood with bird screen.
(motorized damper recommended in extreme cold climates)
- Belt drive evaporator fan for air
balancing.
- 2" 30% pleated filters. (4" available if
desired)
- Stainless steel gas fired heat exchangers
with minimum 25 year non-prorated warranty.
- 2 stage gas input (modulating 100% to 70%)
(If heating to be electric, use minimum 4 stage).
- 2 stage gas heating discharge override
ductstat for minimum temperature control when space thermostat is satisfied.
(Not required when 4 stage or 100% to 30% modulating heating is provided).
- Manual reset low discharge temperature
limit thermostat in event of heating failure.
- Dual independent refrigerant circuits with
interlaced or row split coils (Horizontal split is not acceptable). Four
independent circuits on nominal 26 ton and above.
- 5 minute compressor anti recycle timers
and 20 second time delay between compressors.
- Field adjustable compressor lockout
thermostats for each refrigerant circuit.
- Compressors with 5 year part warranty.
- Hot gas bypass on lead refrigerant
circuit.
- Phase & Brownout protection (In areas
where this is a problem)
- Heating/Cooling lock out interlock.
- Supply air smoke detector.
- Condenser heat reclaim circuit for those
projects where humidity is a factor.
- All components and controls factory
mounted and tested with ETL label.
- For corridor make-up air; provide wall
mounted 2C/2H (2C/4H if electric heating) (4C/4H if 4 stage cooling &
heating) thermostat and subbase with locking cover.
- Dehumidistat with locking cover for
humidity controlled projects.
*Sequence
of Operation:
Control
setup and sequence of operation as follows: Set compressor lock-out thermostat
to close first stage at 60°F and second stage at 80°F outside temperature. (If
4 stage cooling, set lock-out at approximately 60°F, 70°F, 80°F, and 90°F.) Set
discharge override ductstat located in discharge plenum to close first stage at
55°F. Set wall mounted thermostats at 75°F for heating and cooling. System
switch in AUTO position and fan switch in ON position. Set dehumidistat at
50%. Set low limit temperature safety at 35°F.
If wall
mounted thermostat calls for cooling, (both) compressor(s) will run and heating
locked out whenever outside air is above setpoint. Hot gas bypass valve will
maintain evaporator coil above icing condition, regardless of enthalpy of
outside air. Compressor shut off thermostat(s) will lock out second stage
compressor below approximately 80°F and first stage compressor below
approximately 60°F outside air. As temperature continues to drop, wall
thermostat will energize heating stages (*) as required. If room thermostat is
satisfied, 2 stage heating discharge ductstat will override wall stat whenever
unit leaving air temperature falls below 55°F. If leaving air temperature falls
below 35°F, unit will shut down on low limit safety.
If the
space cooling and heating functions are satisfied, the space dehumidistat will
activate reheat by bringing on the first and second stage compressors with the
first stage compressor reheat valve energized. Should the space temperature
rise above the cooling setpoint, the Y1 call will de-energize the reheat and
return the unit back to normal cooling and heating functions.
(*) If with 100% to 30% modulating gas heating,
room thermostat provides heating enable circuit and discharge air sensor in unit
is set at 70°F (field adjustable)

PRODUCTS
FLUID
COILS
Cooling applications
are most commonly used in chilled fluid systems for comfort conditioning of a
forced air stream and in process systems for dehumidification processes. A large
variety of drainable circuiting options makes this a good choice for most
general heat transfer applications. For use with water, glycols, brines, thermal
oils or ammonia.
Heating
applications
are most commonly used in hot fluid systems for comfort conditioning of a forced
air stream and in process systems for drying processes. The collector header
design with internal baffles provides circuiting flexibility while eliminating
the need for return bends, while the splayed header design uses return bends for
circuiting in lieu of a collection header. The term "splayed" means
that the coil headers are offset outward from the coil tubes. The splayed header
coil always has same end connections.
Cleanable applications
are commonly used where mechanical cleaning of the coil tubes is required. One
and two row coils are furnished with removable brass threaded plugs on either or
both ends. Multi-row coils utilize a removable steel head plate in lieu of
coil headers. This plate contains baffles to provide coil circuitry and is
removable for easy access to coil tubes. Cleanable options include cleanable
from the supply connection end, cleanable from the end opposite the supply
connection or cleanable from both ends.
BOOSTER COILS
Duct-mounted reheat coils
which are used in general heating applications. Booster coils are provided with
a variety of casing configurations including fully flanged, slip and drive or
end plates only
STEAM COILS
Standard or steam distributing
construction is available for high and low pressure applications.
Standard steam
type is the basic 5/8" or 1" tube steam coil, known as the single tube
design. The steam supply and condensate return headers and connections are
normally at the opposite ends of the coil. Uniform steam distribution to
each of the coil core tubes is accomplished by proper header assembly design.
The steam supply connection should be located in the center of the header, with
a perforated plate type baffle located directly behind this connection.
Properly sized orifices are located in each of the core tube entrances into the
header.
Steam
distributing
5/8" & 1" tubes are the "freeze resistant" coils, known
as the dual-tube design. It is important to note that any steam coil can freeze
when exposed to freezing temperatures without the proper drainage of the
condensate! This coil design utilizes a smaller inner tube, with precisely
spaced, directional, orifice type perforations. This is to help direct condensate
flow to the return header. The steam supply, condensate return headers,
and connections may be fabricated as a same-end or opposite end orientation.
When made as same end connected, the header appears as a single large header,
but is actually two headers in one. Compartmentalizing the header serves
multiple functions. As well as the supply and return, this compartmentalizing
has the inner steam supply header warming the condensate return, and allows same
end connected single and two row coil construction. This eliminates the unwanted
core tube return bends on a steam coil.
REFRIGERANT COILS
Single, dual or quad compressor circuits
allow precise capacity control. Unique interlaced circuiting options assure
uniform refrigerant distribution over the entire face area of the coil. Wide fin
spacing availability reduces the affect of frost build up on low temperature
applications. For use in central systems or duct applications.
CONDENSER COILS
Condenser coils
are hide side refrigerant coils individually engineered to meet unique
requirements. Fin spacing, circuiting and fin design can all be varied to assure
performance, air and tube side pressure drop limitations are maintained.

We offer two baked
polyester enamel coatings that can be applied by either dipping or spraying.
Both are used for corrosion protection. The FDA Gray meets the
requirements of the US Federal Register and Food and Drug Regulations, Title 21,
Chapter 1, Paragraph 175.300.
Electrodeposition
or E-coat
This is a
water-borne cathodic epoxy electrodeposition coating that meets Title 21 for NSF
applications. It is both durable and flexible, has excellent heat transfer
properties, and is resistant to various chemicals. It also allows for a
very uniform finish throughout the coil.
Baked Phenolic (Heresite,
P-413)
Baked Phenolic
coatings offer excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of acids, solvents,
and mild alkalis. They also have excellent temperature resistance and good
heat transfer properties. The cleaning, application, and curing processes
ensure a durable and flexible coating that meets the requirements of the US
Federal Register and Food and Drug Regulations, Title 21, Chapter 1, Paragraph
175.300.
Electro-Tin
Plated
This is a tin
coating that is electrically adhered to copper. It is normally applied
directly to copper hairpins before the coil is assembled and brazed. It provides
excellent protection against corrosion and does not hinder the brazing process
whatsoever. This coating meets Military Standard T-10727B and is generally
used in combination with anodizing for military applications.
Anodizing (Iridite)
This is a chemical
conversion process used on aluminum and various aluminum alloys. It is
performed on these metals to give them added corrosion protection when a coating
is not employed. It is also used to improve the adhesion of paints and
finishes. This coating meets Military Standard C-5541.
Hot Dip
Galvanizing
This is a zinc
coating that is generally used on steel for corrosion protection and improved

Packaged
Rooftop Units for 100% Outside Air applications and Corridor Makeup Air Systems.
The
AAON
rooftop units are manufactured to function in accordance with Hilton's
particular requirements. Options such as hot gas reheat with modulating
controls, hot gas bypass, alternative coils and filters with numerous other
options including economizer and power exhaust creates a unit which meets the
performance demands.
The Modulating
Hot Gas Reheat option requires the addition of a reheat coil on the discharge
side of the cooling coil and a 3-way solenoid valve in the hot gas line from the
compressor. The 3-way valve allows the moisture removal process to continue, if
required, after the space temperature has been satisfied. In addition, for
improved performance without the wide swings in supply air temperatures or in
those applications with higher outside air requirements, a modulating hot gas
reheat valve provides a controlled amount of reheat to meet the actual
requirement. For 100% outside air applications, this is an ideal solution since
an electronic controller can be set or preset for a specific supply air
temperature into the occupied space.
